Towards a Global compact for migration

by Matteo Scurati

This Summer the UN Members States have agreed an all-encompassing Global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration with the purpose to strengthen international cooperation on migration. The document is the result of a year-long consultation and negotiation process that will be formally completed with its adoption by Member States during an Intergovernmental Conference in Marrakesh, Morocco, on 10 and 11 December (along with its companion, the Compact on Refugees). According to the head of the IOM, director general William Lacy Swing, it marks “the beginning of a new historic effort to shape the global agenda on migration for decades to come” and represents the first-ever UN global agreement on a common approach to the international movement of people.
